Course Description
In this extension course, building on our Music Jam with an Intro to Facial and Text AI course, students will enhance one of their Scratch projects by incorporating facial detection and text classification. Using RAISE AI, they’ll create AI models to detect faces and trigger actions based on facial expressions. Students will also learn to build text classification models that interpret user input and respond accordingly. This course is ideal for kids eager to broaden their horizons and explore the fascinating world of Artificial Intelligence!
Learning Objectives
When students complete Music Jam with an Intro to Facial and Text AI, they will be able to:
- Utilize the RAISE AI Playground, an advanced version of Scratch that allows you to incorporate AI into your projects.
- Enhance projects by using facial detection to trigger sounds based on the user’s facial expressions.
- Build text classification models to process user input and perform actions based on that input.
Prerequisites
These courses must be completed before Music Jam with an Intro to Facial and Text AI:
- Wizard Level 1, Course 1 : Animation and Games with Scratch
-
1. Getting Started with RAISE AI
In this first lesson, students modify their Music Jam project from the prior course, Animation and Games with Scratch. They start by delving into the intriguing world of Artificial Intelligence, learning how AI can detect specific facial expressions to activate different instruments in their project using MIT’s new platform, the RAISE AI Playground. This platform combines Scratch blocks with AI features, enabling students to experiment with both simultaneously. They also learn how to adjust an instrument’s pitch based on the intensity of their expressions. This lesson offers a fun and foundational introduction to AI, merging creativity with advanced technology.
-
2. Using Text Classification
In this lesson, students further develop their Music Jam project from the Animations and Games with Scratch course. They integrate a text classification model that chooses and plays a song based on the user’s mood. Additionally, students explore the integration of voice recognition, allowing them to interact with the AI using spoken commands. By the end of the lesson, students gain a foundational understanding of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, empowering them with the skills to create their own AI models and continue enhancing their Scratch projects.
Class Schedule
All students start in Animation and Gaming in Scratch at Wizard Level I. If you have previous coding experience, take the Placement test to skip ahead. Returning students can continue with the class where they left off.
