Why I Started CodeWizardsHQ
After searching for and not finding a high-quality coding program for my 9-year-old daughter, I started CodeWizardsHQ.
In the summer of 2015, my nine-year-old daughter, Kavya, was finishing third grade. It was around that time I noticed that the world that we lived in was increasingly being surrounded by technology. The foundation of all this technology is code.
As a father, I wanted to prepare my daughter to thrive in the tech-driven future and I wanted to introduce her to computer programming. I thought if she picked up even the basics, she wouldn’t be intimidated by all of the technology she would see around her. I also believed that if she knew how to code, a world of opportunities would be opened up to her, regardless of the field she pursue
I found an online tutorial for learning programming. I set my daughter up to follow the tutorials. I told her that if she got stuck, she could ask for my help. In three minutes, she was back saying, “Daddy, I am stuck. I need help”. It happened every three minutes. That was when I realized that most kids don’t learn on their own. They need to be actively taught.
I set out to teach her.
But I couldn’t show up and start teaching. I needed to prepare. I spent several hours preparing by working through the curriculum. Then I patiently taught her, supporting her while she grasped the concepts.
Then I noticed that the curriculum I was using was dry and wasn’t engaging her. It had the “if-you-do-this, this-will-happen” approach without explaining the “why” behind a concept. It also wasn’t visually interesting. So I spent hours researching online for a better curriculum only to end up creating it myself.
That summer, I spent over 200 hours teaching my daughter to code.
After summer, as I got busy with work, it became more and more difficult to find the time to write curriculum and to teach her. But I didn’t want her to stop learning to code. That was when I started looking for a coding program that would continue what I had started. That meant that I was looking for an extremely high-quality program.
A program that has an engaging curriculum, one where she would be inherently motivated to learn. Curriculum that is enjoyable yet challenging.
I wanted a program that was taught by a knowledgeable instructor who was willing to patiently teach her. Someone who would build a relationship with her, inspire her to learn, and was ultimately invested in her success.
Getting stuck and not having help was the single most important thing that frustrated my daughter and made her want to quit. I wanted a program that offered her the support she needed when she needed it.
I couldn’t find one.
So I started CodeWizardsHQ to build the high-quality coding program that I wanted for my own daughter. That’s the spirit with which we do everything at CodeWizardsHQ. Your child will get exactly what I wanted for mine. Nothing less. Engaging curriculum. Inspiring instructors. Comprehensive support. All designed to make the best place for a child to learn to code.
I invite you to join the CodeWizardsHQ program and experience it yourself. We look forward to teaching your child!
